Coach Mike Krzyzewski gets many of his key players back,
a definite positive. Duke (31-6) has a talented backcourt in 6'-4"
J.J. Redick (15.9 ppg) and 6'-3" senior Daniel Ewing (12.0 ppg, 1.9
apg). Redick led the Blue Devils in scoring and shot a sizzling 95% from
the free throw line!
The frontcourt is big and deep, as usual. 6'-9"
255-lb. C Shelden Williams is the steady big man in the frontcourt, pulling
down an average of 8.8 rebounds pg last season, leading the team. Throw
in 6'-10", 215-lb junior F Shavlik Randolph, and they have plenty
of beef up front to rebound while the guards bomb away from long range,
which is a Duke trademark. They can run-and-gun with anybody and play
a slow-down, halfcourt game, if necessary. Point guard Sean Dockery steps
in and tries to fill Chris Duhon's sneakers, altho
ugh he isn't the floor general, scorer or defender that
Duhon was. The Duke bench is not as strong as in recent seasons, which
will be interesting to watch. Quick or deep opponents may try to run the
Blue Devils to attack the bench, or be aggressive and try to get the starters
into early fouls.
The Blue Devils were 17-2 SU/8-9 ATS at home last
season and 8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS on the road. Duke plays its best defense at
home (60 ppg allowed) where they were 8-4 UNDER the total. They will be
very good, of course, but might not be as strong as last season.
