Background: In 1979, Bette Midler starred in The Rose, a film whose main character was based on Janis Joplin. Though Midler had been appearing in Broadway plays (Fiddler On The Roof), was a regular New York City nightclub act (with, of all people, the wonderful Barry Manilow) and had released several albums throughout the '70s, it was this film appearance that set her up for the stardom she enjoys to this day. The film's title track was a top 10 hit, and Midler struck while she hot: She followed up immediately with the concert film Divine Madness and a book A View From A Broad. It was a long way from her first top 10 single, a cover of the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
