About Carole King

Genere: Rock
Latest Album: Love Makes the World
Background: One of the most vital figures in pop music throughout both the '60s and '70s, Carole King (b. Carole Klein, Feb. 9, 1942, Brooklyn, New York) is renowned both for her songwriting skill--displayed via the countless hits she penned for dozens of performers in the '60s--and her own best-selling recordings of the '70s. If she had done nothing in her career but record 1971's Tapestry, she would still be a major presence: The album, which sold over 15 million copies, was No. 1 for 15 weeks, stayed on the charts for an astounding 302 weeks, and was the third biggest seller of the '70s (topped only by Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). Additionally, King and friend James Taylor are generally credited with ushering in the early '70s era of the singer-songwriter; Taylor's first No. 1 hit, in fact, was his version of King's "You've Got a Friend" from his 1971 album Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon, on which King herself played piano. Throughout most of the '70s, King enjoyed massive popularity with her series of Ode albums that continued in the same warm vein as Tapestry, but by the late '70s her popularity started to fade somewhat. Spending much of the '80s away from the recording scene, she returned in 1989 with the warmly received City Streets, her vast writing talent still amply in evidence.
