Background: Because of his early preponderance of sentimental ballad hits, Collin Raye wasn't generally recognized as a multi-dimensional country star until the release of his third album, Extremes, in 1994. With a smooth tenor that's been much compared with Vince Gill's, and an impressive track record for recording interesting songs, often with unusual or complex themes, Raye has emerged as one of the most familiar and reliable voices in country music. Born Floyd Collin Wray on August 22, 1959, in DeQueen, Arkansas, Raye first hit the charts in 1983 as a member of the Wray Brothers Band (Collin was Bubba Wray). The group, later under the name of the Wrays, had four minor hits between '83 and '87. Even since becoming a star himself, Raye has eschewed Nashville life to live in Greenville, Texas, and be closer to his children. To him, in fact, doing his job successfully means "leaving music behind my children can be proud of." As Raye's star has risen and his vocal performances have gained in confidence, he's become more and more committed to finding songs that everyday people really connect with. Even his classy 1996 Christmas album of carols and traditional material has the feel of an enduring favorite. Raye was nominated for the Country Music Association's Male Vocalist Of The Year in 1996, and "I Think Of You" justly won the Academy of Country Music's Video Of The Year award that same year.
