Background: San Francisco attracts those with a wish to live out the artistic life. Beautiful losers are a dime a dozen. Singer Adam Duritz had those dreams as well. With classic rock as their reference, his Bay Area band Counting Crows stoked commercial radio with their easily assimilated style. Fusing the poppier aspects of Van Morrison with the rustic recreations of the Band, CC assembled their debut album, August And Everything After, under the sure-handed guidance of producer T-Bone Burnett. Burnett intuitively understood the band's appeal and kept the fuss to a minimum, pushing Adam Duritz's roots-rock gargle to the front of the mix. This unfortunately also put into plain view the Crows' major drawback: Duritz's cloying overseriousness and tendency to see all of life as a poetic image waiting to happen. Thanks to serious radio and MTV play, "Mr. Jones" became a hit and the band (or at least Duritz, since no one could pick the rest of the Crows out of a supermarket line) got to be the "big, big stars" Duritz had been dreaming about.
