Carl Bell of Fuel, however--who grew up in rural Tennessee in a household sans TV--made what could be considered a painful experience into a formative one. Forced to discover alternative ways of entertaining himself, Bell began educating himself musically by listening to his brother's record collection--a haul of 500 albums of all genres won in a radio contest. Instead of flipping on a (nonexistent) TV after school, Bell claims he'd "throw on a Stones record" instead. Avid rocking out soon translated into an urge to play music himself, so Bell taught himself how to play guitar with neighborhood pal Jeff Abercrombie. Both became accomplished at banging out cover tunes and power chords, but allegedly, axeman-in-training Bell convinced Abercrombie to take up the complementary bass guitar, by alluding it was "cooler."
