Background: In the world of funk, where James Brown and George Clinton sat atop the innovation totem pole, Oklahoma's Gap Band were near the bottom, somewhere between Slave and the Fatback Band. It didn't really matter, though; derivative, dumb, but exceedingly funky, the Gap Band's singles were some of the best rump-shakers of the early '80s. Formed in Tulsa in the late '70s by brothers Charles, Ronnie and Robert Wilson, the Gap Band combined the streamlined funk of Rick James with the rousing gang vocals of Parliament-Funkadelic, and Gap Gold (the title of their greatest-hits collection) was born. Short on lyrical genius, but long on hard-partying bonhomie, the Gap Band released hit after dance-floor hit; if you couldn't get down to "You Dropped A Bomb On Me," "Party Train" or "Burn Rubber On Me," you were obviously thinking too hard. Goofy touches like the "Party Train" video (which featured the cowboy-hatted Wilson brothers strutting their stuff among rollerbladers, weightlifters and street performers at Venice Beach) only solidified their image as good-time ambassadors.
