Next generation industrialists were a kinder, gentler lot. Ministry, though far from placid, at least presented angst that was framed in familiar rock-ish parameters, and KMFDM followed the dance music impulse to some delightfully funky conclusions. En Esch and Sascha Konietzko (the two-man nucleus
of this ensemble) met in Hamburg in the early
'80s: Konietzko had been dabbling in the art
scene; classically trained percussionist En
Esch had relocated from Frankfurt. Their earliest
recordings are intriguing experiments that combine
spry, propulsive dance grooves with soundbites,
samples and live instruments. As time passed,
the music coalesced into a much beefier sound,
but they've never lost their wry sense of humor
or their great affection for dance forms. As
they approached the '90s, KMFDM artfully incorporated
lots of explosive, metallic elements into the
mix. 1993's Angst is perhaps their strongest
album to date. More muscular than Money, and
not quite as eclectic as the subsequent Nihil,
it is a lean, sinewy album that transcends the
