Background: Originally conceived as America's answer to the Rolling Stones, the group started an entire scene in Manhattan, playing legendary sets at the Mercer Arts Center and Max's Kansas City. Brooklynite pals David Johansen (a Mick Jagger wannabe if there ever was one) and Johnny Thunders (nee Genzale--ditto in regards to Keith Richards) joined forces with Sylvain Sylvain, bassist Arthur Kane, and drummer Jerry Nolan (replacing original drummer Billy Murcia, who died from a drug overdose during the band's first trip to England) to create a rock 'n' roll style that was something totally new at the time. Although androgyny was always something just beneath the tip of the iceberg in most rock 'n' roll, the Dolls took it all the way. Motley Crue and others would later ape and capitalize on the group's bisexual, glam-drag look, if not their terrific rock 'n' roll sound--the latter of which both spoofed and revered, celebrating the essence of good ol' rock 'n' roll music.
