Background: Born Christopher Ruben Studdard, the youngest son of two educators, Ruben sang for the first time at the Rising Star Baptist church in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, at age 3. He continued singing gospel in church, performing solos as a child while his mother sang in the local choir. During his years at Huffman High School, he played football and received a sports scholarship to Alabama A&M University, but he felt that his calling was elsewhere: After growing up listening to his mother's Donny Hathaway collection, Fred Hammond, and a lot of gospel, Ruben was convinced that his destiny lay in music, so he decided to be a voice major in college instead. After he graduated in spring 2000, he gave himself five years to make it as a singer, and sure enough, with the help of a certain megahit reality show, he achieved his goal.
