About ShaggyGenere: Hip Hop / RaggaeLatest Album: Hey Sexy Lady Background: Spicing up the reggae of his Jamaican birthplace with hearty portions of American-born rap and R&B, Shaggy has brought more commercial attention to his native musical genre than it perhaps has ever enjoyed before. Born Orville Richard Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica on October 22, 1968, young Shaggy got his nickname from the long-haired hippy character in the Scooby Doo cartoons, a local favorite. At 18 he left Jamaica to live with his mother in Brooklyn, where he quickly adapted to and became a part of the New York reggae scene. A pairing with reggae radio DJ and producer Sting resulted in a pair of local hits ("Mampie" and "Big Up") before the financially-strapped 19-year-old joined the Marines, a decision that would land him in Kuwait during the Gulf War. Upon returning to his station at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, he regularly took 18-hour drives to New York to resume his recording career. In the summer of 1993 he hit paydirt with "Oh Carolina," a cover song first recorded by Prince Buster that sampled portions of the original cut. The song brought Shaggy one of the most lucrative recording contracts in the history of Virgin Records, which released his major label debut, Pure Pleasure, the same year. A follow-up record, 1995's Boombastic, featured a reggae-driven cover of Mungo Jerry's '70s hit "In The Summertime" that also became a radio favorite, while the LP went on to win a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album and spend 30 weeks at number one on Billboard's Reggae Album Chart, a chart record.
