Background: Colvin was born January 10, 1958 in Vermillion, S.D., and lived in Ontario and Illinois before dropping out of Southern Illinois University to play hard rock. She moved to Austin, San Francisco and finally New York, where she worked the declining folk scene. While she appeared in off-Broadway shows, her first music break occurred singing backup for Suzanne Vega for her 1987 tour. Colvin's individual talents were brought to the attention of Vega's management and they helped get her signed to Columbia Records where she has recorded several moderately successful albums of thoughtful adult-contemporary folk. Her debut, Steady On, features the help of Bruce Hornsby and Vega, but the true force of the album is Colvin's sly yet forceful voice and her quite enticing lyrics. Fat City continued the approach, adding a cover of Warren Zevon's "Tenderness On The Block." The cover idea continued with Cover Girl, an entire album of remakes that showcased Colvin's abilities with all types of material, recorded half live in concert and half in the studio. Live '88, a tape of an early performance, was issued in 1995, and A Few Small Repairs was Colvin's return to fresh, original material. The album also, somewhat surprisingly, turned out to be Colvin's big break, as its single, "Sunny Came Home," took home Grammys for Song Of the Year and Record Of The Year for 1997.
