Background: Originally a side project between Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses (and eventually Belly), the Breeders became a real band quite quickly as each performers' main gig dried up. Their initial release, Pod, is an extremely tentative-sounding debut, "recorded" by Steve Albini. Deal is obviously the leader, but bassist Josephine Wiggs and Slint drummer Britt Walford (credited here as Shannon Doughton) add to the ensemble sound which, while competent, suffers from a lack of serious songwriting.
