Red Sox History: Little did anyone know that when the Boston Red
Sox played their first game ever on April 26, 1901 that they would become
one of the most popular baseball teams in MLB history. Initially they
were called the Boston Americans until the name change in 1908. This is
a team that has certainly had its ups and downs.
Initially the team started off quite strong. The Red Sox were one of the
first teams in the newly founded American League. For the first 18 seasons,
they were the most successful team of the American League. They achieved
first place in six out of those eighteen seasons. They went to the World
Series five times in that span and were crowned world champions every
single time. This was all due in part to great management and great pitching.
Cy Young joined the Red Sox in 1901 and played 8 seasons.
During his career he completed 751 games, threw for a mind boggling 7,356
innings, and averaged 300 innings a season. Cy was the ultimate athlete
and is honored by MLB with his name being associated with the award given
to the top pitchers of each season, the Cy Young Award.
In 1914, the Red Sox dealt for a young unknown player
named George Herman Ruth. His nicknames included 'The Babe' and 'The Bambino.'
Initially Babe Ruth was in the minor leagues but not for long. He made
is debut July 11, 1914. Babe Ruth is known for his power hitting and his
monster home runs. However, most people do not realize that he was one
of the premier pitchers of his time. In his debut season he only appeared
in 4 games and achieved a 2-1 record. His next 2 seasons proved to be
much more successful. Babe Ruth won 18 and 23 games respectively for the
1915 and 1916 seasons. During that tenure, the Red Sox were also World
Series champions. Babe Ruth was so highly regarded that he was already
considered one of the best left-handed pitchers ever in MLB history. On
October 9, 1916 he even pitched a complete 14 inning game against the
Brooklyn Dodgers (now know as Los Angeles) in the World Series.
