Team Notes: In 1873, Remington produced the first practical typewriter,
Jesse James and his gang pulled off the first successful train robbery
in the American West, Tchaikovsky composed The Tempest, and the first
professional baseball team to be named the Washington Nationals took the
field in the National Association. There are a handful of reasons why
Washington's newest professional baseball team has just been named the
Nationals, and historical significance is one of them. The original Washington
Nationals played in the National Association in 1873 and 1875; the Union
Association's Washington Nationals played in 1884; and the American Association's
Washington Nationals played in 1884 as well.
The Nationals started the 2004 season with Terrmel Sledge,
Peter Bergeron and Carl Everett in the outfield. By the end of the season,
Montreal had used a total of 12 players in the outfield, and most of them
were not productive. The Nationals feel they have fixed part of the problem
for the 2005 season by acquiring RF Jose Guillen, who is expected to drive
in runs and hit for average. The question is who will play the other two
outfield spots between Sledge, Endy Chavez and Brad Wilkerson. Wilkerson,
the most versatile player on the club, will play either the outfield or
first base on a regular basis. This year, however, Wilkerson would like
to play just one position. Last year he played all three outfield spots
and first base. Wilkerson most likely will start the season in left field.
Chavez was doing the little things to help the Expos win last year. He
finally learned how to bunt and started stealing bases on a regular basis.
But there's still room for improvement. The Nationals would like Chavez
to have a higher on-base percentage, which was .318 last year. The feeling
in the organization is, if Chavez can't do the job, Wilkerson will be
switched to center field and Sledge will play left.
